The Reed family have been farmers and butchers in Devon since the 1850’s. Family members have grown produce at various farms around the county along with establishing two very successful butchers shops in Torquay and Newton Abbot. Herbert Reed (our grandfather) established the first pasteurised milk round in Torbay with his Model Hygienic Dairy. Now we are continuing that entrepreneurial spirit with our brand new Aquaponic Farm.
Based in the remains of a disused quarry we have built our farm over the course of 5 years. What started as a waste area of bracken, bramble and buddleia has now been transformed into a farm that is both productive for crops and for wildlife.
So far we have constructed a massive grow-house with six Aquaponic systems, a farm shop, several outbuildings and have planted up a heritage orchard with varieties of apple dating back to the late 1600’s. This is on top of constructing roads and bringing services to the farm from over 200m away.
This has all been achieved part time by three members of the our family. We have not brought in outside help to carry out the construction but wielded the hammers and power tools ourselves!
Our future plans include expanding the shop, building a smoke-house on site, providing training courses and of course continuing to develop our delicious “Made on of Farm” range of jams, sauces and chutneys.
